Marie-Antoinette was an Austrian princess who was married to Louis, the future king of France, at the age of 14. In 1775, her husband ascended the throne as Louis XVI. Though initially popular with the French public, the young queen became notorious for her lavish lifestyle and claims that she controlled the king. As the country lapsed into famine and financial ruin, Marie-Antoinette”s extravagant spending contributed, albeit as small amount, to mounting the national debt while wreaking havoc on her reputation. When the revolutionary forces took control of the government and dismantled the monarchy in 1792, the royal family was placed under house arrest. Marie-Antoinette was tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal and guillotined in October 1793, nine months after the execution of her husband.
